Loop Energy Provides Queen’s University Students with Industry Experience Through Education Consulting Project

Over the recent fall semester, Loop Energy provided 80 first- and second-year students from the Smith School of Business at Queen’s University with the opportunity to gain industry experience through a consulting education project. Led by a student-run organization, CREO Solutions, students conducted a market analysis project for Loop. The analysis evaluated the market size for hydrogen fuel cells in railway and aviation applications, identifying the competitor landscape and growth opportunities.

Over ten weeks, students formed six groups and delivered reports for each application’s different geographic market. Students were supported by weekly skill-based workshops led by the CREO team throughout the research phase. At the end of the semester, students presented their findings in a report “Loop Market Expansion: Hydrogen fuel cell market sizing and competitor analysis for aviation and railways.”

The project was an opportunity for Loop to provide students with exposure to the rapidly growing cleantech industry. By playing the role of consultants, students were able to experience the challenges and need for innovation that comes with providing zero-emissions solutions to the world. The participating students will take away experience that will help propel their careers upon completing their studies.

“As a team of first years, we were incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with Loop Energy under CREO Solutions’ education program. Roleplaying as consultants, we had a blast researching the European railway market and attempting a quantitative market sizing model. Moreover, this consulting engagement allowed us a window to see what a consulting project is really like, simultaneously helping us build lifelong friendships so early in our university experience.” – Queen’s University students, Joseph Xie, Steven Vuong, Anne Yin, Tyler Tran and Nicole Stein.

“I really enjoyed working on the Loop project throughout the CREO Consulting Education Program. Not only did the project introduce me to and help me learn about the cleantech and fuel cell industries, but it also allowed me to truly understand the impact Loop is making in helping to build a zero-emissions world.” – Queen’s University student, Martin Falzone.

Along with exploring the viability of fuel cells in these emerging markets, the project also strengthens the relationship between Loop and Queen’s University.

“I want to thank the students and the CREO team for all their dedication and hard work. It was a pleasure introducing our story to the students at Queens. The hydrogen space continues to be a long-term play for us. We believe the analysis report from students will provide Loop Energy with a better picture of its outlook in the medium to long term.” – Loop Energy project liaison, Bill Zhang.

Loop’s relationship with Queen’s University began when President & CEO, Ben Nyland was invited to provide an overview of the hydrogen fuel cell industry to students in October 2021.
